When I was first handed a gourd full of yerba mate, freshly filled with hot water, I was a little taken aback by the metal straw sticking into a small pot full of tea. I was told it gives you better energy than coffee and has more health benefits than green tea, so I tried it. It tasted like a bitter sweet green tea and it was true. I felt much more clear headed yet still buzzing with energy not long after having a few drinks out of the mate gourd.
In 2008 as a sophomore in college, I began drinking so much organic yerba mate to see me through my studies that I began to order it in bulk from various supply companies. That same year I began selling it at the local outdoor market as a loose leaf tea. When I started selling an iced version of the tea with honey, sales really started to improve and I realized it could be prepared in place of pretty much any coffee or tea recipe. Not only did I get to drink as much mate as I wanted, I was actually sharing this amazing product with people and learning a lot along the way.
